FOCUS was one of the first independent research agencies to be established in Slovakia. The core of the agency's professional team was formed in the spring of 1990, when it initiated, analyzed and published one of the first independent public opinion polls in Slovakia. The agency was established as a legally independent entity in 1991. It was founded by a group of sociologists, polling professionals, and communication and advertising specialists. In 1993, the FOCUS agency established its own network of interviewers and included marketing research and the research of advertisement and media as part of its services.
